A variety of aluminium oxide known as corundum, sapphire is formed in metamorphic and igneous rock as well as alluvial deposits. It is a very strong precious gemstone, second only to the diamond in strength. Found in a variety of colours but most recognisably navy blue, the main sources of sapphire include Myanmar, Czech Republic, Brazil, Kenya, India, Australia and Sri Lanka.ÂÂ

Sapphire throughout history
The name sapphire is said to be derived from the Greek and Latin words for blue, ‘sapheiros’ and ‘saphirus’. A cherished gemstone since ancient times traditionally associated with truth, nobility and sincerity, the sapphire was used as a protective talisman by Greek, Roman and Egyptian royalty.
