How and where green aventurine is formed

A variety of quartz, aventurine is characterised by its mineral inclusions that produce a glistening effect known as ‘aventurescence’. Most commonly green in colour as a result of tiny fuchsite particles present when the quartz is formed, aventurine can also be found in blue, red, brown and peach varieties. Its main sources include Italy, Brazil, China, India, Russia, Tibet and Nepal.

Derived from the Italian term “a ventura" meaning “by chance”, the name aventurine refers to a lucky mishap that occurred in the 1700s when an Italian glass worker mistakingly dropped metal filings into a vat of melting glass. The sparkling result of this happy accident marked the discovery of aventurine glass, its name then passed on to the natural stone that shared its shimmering iridescence.
