How and where turquoise is formed

 
Found in varying shades of greenish-blue, turquoise has been treasured by cultures all over the world for thousands of years. Clumps of turquoise are formed by a chemical reaction that occurs when liquid containing minerals such as copper and aluminium leak through rock veins. Deposits have been discovered in locations including the United States, Egypt, Mexico, China, Iran, Peru, Poland, Russia, France, Tibet, Egypt, Afghanistan and Arabia.

Turquoise throughout history

One of the few gemstones to have a name so commonly referred to as a colour, turquoise has been used and admired by cultures all over the world since ancient times. Its earliest evidence dates back to Ancient Egyptian tombs where artefacts such as King Tut's iconic turquoise adorned burial mask was found. Said to protect against unknown dangers, it was worn by nomadic Native American tribes to keep them safe as they journeyed across America, as well as Turkish soldiers who carried it with them to war.

Turquoise meanings, properties and uses
